Just as a comment to John Forrester's SET DEFAULT procedure:
 
As of VMS 4.4, SHOW DEFAULT will complain if the default directory
doesn't exist. Sadly enough, SET DEFAULT doesn't...
"This might be added in a future major release of VAX/VMS."
