I found out after a dance with the TSC that just doing a /norewind is likely to go past the end of the tape and into the next save set, which 6 months ago might have spanned volumes. The solution? Dismount/nounload, Mount/for.... Then backup properly finds the end of the save sets that you put on the tape THIS time, because it runs into the end of tape mark it just wrote a while back. Yes, this is a horribly hairy kludge, but it let me do backups without having my tape librarian degauss the tapes every night.
