The release notes for LATplus 1.1 say this:
 
  o  /EIGHTBIT characteristic - The V1.0 software incorrectly set this
     characteristic according to the terminal server port's character
     size.  This has been corrected in V1.1.
 
May be the cause of your problem---I haven't tried this version yet
myself.
