In-Reply-To: Msg of 21 Jan 1987 13:48-EST from firearms-request at cbstr1.att.com There is no state in the Union that a Carry permit for a concealed weapon is not needed though (See David Kaplan's Article - New York Law Review) there is a common law basis to carry a concealed weapon. Transport is another issue. When I lived on California, I used to tranport my S&W .38 quite a bit. I was driving a pick-up truck then so locking the gun in the truck was out of the question. I didn't particularly want to incur the charge of concealed weapons nor have the CHP make a mistake. I used to put the gun in an open box on the dashboard of the truck. Same as when I used to get pulled over was to put both hands through the truck window until all of our signals were clear. New Mexico is indeed one of the most Constitutionally Conservative States along with Vermont. Still a permit is needed to carry a concealed weapon and it is against the Law to enter any premise purveying Alcohol (either retail wholesale or Bar) with a gun. (In New Mexico, as you might imagine, people all have liquor licenses) I beleive the penalty is 1 Year for Possession of a Firearm on a Licensed Premise. Penalties for using a firearm in the commission of a crime are along the lines of Utah and extremely heavy. They stick to it as well and thereby keep the Firearm Laws off the books. (Hurray, Hurray, Hurray) Needless to say that critics are always in the wings with sayings like Jail Sentences, no matter how heavy, won't bring my poor little Johnnie Back (when in reality, Johnnie probably was breaking into someone's house with a submachine gun).
