I don't know about Lauren's package, but uuslave is a VERY simpleminded UUCP file transfer hack. To get news really running you'd need to port inews/rnews, expire, readnews or rn or vn or vnews, etc. Remember also that since MS-DOS is a primitive single-tasking OS, the machine would be completely tied up while news was arriving or leaving. Given total USENET volume, you'd have to devote almost all the waking hours of a PC to keep up (my PC, running UNIX, is on the phone perhaps 10 hours a day, and we only get about half the newsgroups).
