I posted what seemed a trivial request to info-telecom a while back, re a possible schematic for a simple "off-hook" indicator so that other residents of my house wouldn't use the phone when my modem was in use. The preferred method was to have an LED showing a off-hook and/or an on-hook status, and either built into the phone or being able to tap into the line at any point in the circuit.
