Fanout boxes, as they're often called, are available from DEC (as you've noted), TCL, Excelan, and probably others. The same constraints apply as for mixing controllers with transceivers - that Ethernet 1 controllers match to E1 transcehvers; E2 controllers to E2 transceivers, and 802.3 to 802.3.
