I concur entirely with David's remark. The preperation needed for Software Engineering and CS are completely different. A lot of good can be got by offering different courses and degrees for both. The present day graduates know very little of either. Specifically, people interested in theoretical work gain very little mathematical maturity in their courses as is required to do research in these areas.
