Here's the line I use to start Gnu-emacs from my .uwmrc: !"xterm =10x10-1000-1000 -e emacs -w =143x68+0+0&" The xterm window is positioned off the screen so I don't have to look at it. If I replace the xterm by a csh, everything works more or less the same except that emacs frequently neglects to bring the screen up to date when it should. There are a lot of unknowns here that I haven't explored, so I can't tell you much more than the fact that the above incantation seems to work best.
