I had a problem that exhibited the identical symptom.  It turns out that our
alloca() (This is on an ISI V16, running 3.05) was broken.  Once I fixed that
(and it took FOREVER to find that bug), everything worked just fine.  If you
look in alloca.s (of the GNU distribution) you will find comments about broken
alloca()'s.
