I'm surprised nobody has brought up Neil Katin's virtual disk - VDK.

It's fast, recoverable, expands dynamically, can be partitioned
into multiple ram disks, can be renamed, REMEMBERS the time across
warm boots, is free, and is written by one of the Busy Guys at Amiga
(although he's not there any longer).

People Link has it; I'm sure other services and bulletin boards will
have it soon if they don't already.
