That's why the note said ``object code'' not just ``code''. sorry for any misunderstanding. In fact the gnu i use as compiled using the att-sys5.2.2.h config file. (or whatever it is actually called). Inasfar as the ^s/^Q problem goes: thanks for the hint. I'll try that.
