First of all, many thanks to all those people who responded to my query about genealogy programs for MS-DOS machines. There were so many of you that I believe there's significant interest in such programs to warrant posting a summary. The reply of Guerry Anderson Semones is typical of most so I'll just present it verbatim below. By far the best genealogy software on the market is the package called "Personal Ancestral File". This is software produced by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons). Genealogy is really important to members of the Mormon church, and the church has responded with a superb package of software that not only catalogs your family information, but includes a separate application for organizing your research data. There are many strengths in this package. It has bomb-proof data entry routines, multiple form reporting system, and online pedigree searchs with lots of flexibility. The program comes with a 340 page manual that is replete with examples and information on record keeping. It's clearly written too.... Now, as for cost...$35.00. That's all. CHEAP! My wife and I have been using this package extensively and there is nothing better in the free/shareware market. To get additional info, call this number 1-800-531-2584 and tell them you want info on "Personal Ancestral File." The program is available only by MAIL. The above number is the FREE 800 support hotline. This package is written in C, is fast, is easy, and represents what your friend wants: high quality, low price. The system is now in version 2.0 for MS/DOS. Other versions are available for other non-IBM type machines.... And from John Carter and Miriam Clifford here's the catalog number and address for ordering.
