Summary: Norton Commander halts DOS 3.1 print

I just upgraded to DOS 3.1 and now I cannot use print.com to print
to my printer while I am running the Norton Commander.  The jobs
queue-up, but nothing prints unless I exit from the Norton Commander.
I am running Norton Commander 1.0; is there a newer version ?
I thought print worked in the background.  Any suggestions ?
