oh, by the way, I neglected to mention that I do not yet have the
rom+drive upgrade so I am trying to use the 800k external drive with
single sided disks.

Also I did use the same disks when I tested the drive with a real 512 and
everything seemed to work fine -- it just doesn't work on my 512 upgrade.
