I CAN, it turns out, get text in a first footer to print properly. But now I'm MORE scared, because there is no difference (that I can find) between the documents that work fine and the ones that don't, except that the ones that don't were around for a while and I did a fair amount of unrelated hacking in them, mainly in the first header. When I create a new document and put a first header and a first footer on it, it works fine.
