To generate a TAB on the screen you should use the sequence Ctrl-I or Esc-I. If I put "\EI" in the "ta" field of termcap some programs will work properly ( mille game ), some will not work ( vi ). If I put "^I" in the "ta" field, the opposite will happen. I made a discovery that if I put "\EI^I" in the "ta" field, everything works fine.
