When somebody leaves a process in background and then logs out the modem does not hangup. Then, when another call comes in on that modem it does not answer. Everything seems to work correctly when no background processes remain. We are running 4.3BSD on a VAX-11/785, with Hayes Smartmodem 1200s connected to DHU-11s. Modem control is enabled on the DHU-11 lines, and all switches are up on the Hayes modems except 4 and 8, which are down. These are the newer Smartmodems with 10 switches instead of 8. A typical session that causes the trouble is: % make >& make.out & % logout Please respond by mail if you have seen this before, know what might be wrong or know how to fix this undesireable behavior.
