Instead of stating SPAWN/NOWAIT in order to let your process continue
working while you work on something else (please excuse the terrible
prose) why couldn't one say:

DISCONNECT/CONTINUE (ASSUMING it is a virtual terminal.)

One would have to log in again but then you could connect afterwards.
This is uncomfortble but may be better than SPAWNing.
