Binary mode FTP is supposed to be able to deal with such things, since it passes data in a transparent manner. The only REAL problem is that FTP cannot handle the different file types that VMS supports/requires. This is a problem with VMS, not with FTP. Don't fix it by hacking on FTP. There are reasonable ways of encoding and decoding the proper FDL onto the binary file so that binary mode FTP will work properly. The need to standardize should be in finding a de-facto standard encoding, not in enhancements to an already overburdened networking program. Cheers, Tony ;-) -------
