I found out something rather disturbing a few weeks ago; that the "N" command in vnews marks the article being displayed as read, just like the "n" command does, before going to the next newsgroup. The "N" command is described in vnews.help as N Go to newsgroup (next is default) and in the man page as N [newsgroup] Go to the next newsgroup or named newsgroup. Now, I would call this a bug, but I found at least one user here who counts on this behavior! I shudder to think how many news articles I've missed, saying "I'll come back to this group later."
