The salesman for a vendor of DES boards for the IBM PC called me up about his exciting new product, and I asked him about the impact of DES decertification. No problem - they're already working on substituting the "Harris" chip for the DES chip they use now. He didn't know very much - like the DES but better, like the DES but this time the U.S. will exercise tighter controls over who gets the chips - but talked as though the device were already in production.
