As we are planning to purchase an IBM-PC (or close compatible) to connect to
our existing Ethernet network, I am looking for a hardware/software
combination to let the PC act as an Ethernet Monitor.

The hardware will probably be a 3Com or a Micom board. 
The software should be able to let me have a look at the traffic on the
Ethernet LAN, produce statistics on network traffic etc. etc..

Does such a beast exist ?

Please Email any suggestions you might have, and I will summarize to the
net in about two weeks.
