For this reason I cut hoptoad's link to leadsv a month or so ago. Every message that came out of there had a return address that did not work for replying (leadsv.leads.lmsc.com!user, which is not registered, so the Internet ".com" handler rejects it). These messages typically were replied to, either by mailer daemons or by people, and then the replies would bounce at hoptoad. As Postmaster, I got tired of seeing all this needless junk mail and tried to encourage leadsv to fix their mailer. After repeated pleading for them to fix it, I broke the link. All they would have had to do is add "leadsv!" to the front of what they had, and/or avoid using a domain name until it was registered; this was too much for them. I don't think there's a need for UUCP Protocol Police, but if you have a neighbor that generates screwy addresses, producing lots of bounced mail, consider applying a bit of peer pressure. As their links drop away they might schedule time for mailer maintenance. Whether or not they do, your site will never be bothered by their junkmail again! -- Copyright 1987 John Gilmore; you can redistribute only if your recipients can.
