The software we received from Interphase for their
Vtape 3209 tape controller contains a bug
that does not allow us to use dd.  
Tar and dumps work fine, it's just dd that's broken.

If you have an Interphase Vtape 3209 tape drive controller
and have fixed this bug or have any information
about it please let me know.
