They were a welcome change from the two-dimensionality of previous icons. As for suggestions, adding slight shadows to an icon gives it more "substance". Doing this to the Preferences and NewCLI icons produced an immediate improvement, it seemed to me. On a similar subject, here is how my pointer is currently set.
