Thanks to everyone who mailed suggestions.  They told me what I should
see, but didn't.  After testing the modem, I replaced my Radio Shack
cable with the one to my printer and "Voila" I was able to
use kermit to connect to the VAX.  NOw I can never truly say that
I left my work behind in the office.
