The Apple Laserwrite and Laserwriter+ have serial ports. So any 'ol PC can talk to them. But what can they talk about? Well, the Apple beasts talk Postscript - that's Adobe's overprices page description language (look for two clones of Postscript this year!). Anyhow - you can communicate DIRECTLY with the printer from you PC and treat it like a computer (some have said that this is Apple's most powerful computer) by connection via the serial port to the device and typing: executive You will enter into the Postscript interpreter. But the cookbook and reference manual and have a ball. But I suggest you buy a program that translates *things* into postscript and go that route (PC Paint, PageMake, VENTURA, etc.) HOOK-UP. On the PC type: mode com1:9600,n,8,1,- . You can now use a communications program to get at the postscript device or redirect things to com1: Page 289 of the Postscript Reference manual goes into more detail about connecting to the Apple Laserwriter. JUNE 1: Distributors should have on hand the new NEC LC-890 LED based printer - that's right - LED. Lasers are so passe these days... Anyhow - for a list price of $4495 this baby will come with 3 Mbytes RAM, 200 page paper bin (input and output), POSTSCRIPT, HP Laserjet+ emulation, etc. No doubt about it - I've ordered one already. The best thing is this printer's toner cartridges cost only $20 (list). Yep! No, I can't tell you how long they will last, not now anyway. Drop me a line if you want more info. On the same general note - the QMS PS-800+ should leave the shipping gates FRIDAY (today if my systems calls the right machine) April 24, 1987. Have fun. David Geller Electric Logic, Inc.
