Have they also tried ps, ipcs etc....??  None of these will work
either.  Stripping /unix certainly does not do any good.

It's called cc.  Recompile *everything* on your system including the
kernel.  Either that or reload all objects from a recent backup.

Before using a command as root, its wise to read the manual carefully.
