The technique for resetting the mail count is documented in the MAIl reference
manual around page 7 I think, along with other useful items a system manager
ought to know (viz MAIL$FLAGS).  I suggest those of you having problems go
read it.

For those who cant read, here is what you do...

    (1)    Go into mail
    (2)    Note how many spurious unread messages you have
    (3)    Type READ/NEW that number of times, ignoring any
        'no new messages' errors.

this will reset your count ready for next time.
