If they come configured the other way, and your wires don't implement the modem control signals, then when you attempt to log in the system will just sit there. Makes it a little hard to change! (yes, you can work on the console). Many sites don't add the extra wire for economic reasons, if you have hundreds of terminals, the extra wire (or 4 wires if you really do it correctly, and have carrier in both directions, and RTS/CTS as well) can make a big difference to the cost. Not that I advocate the cost cutting, at least having carrier from the terminal to the host is a very good idea, the other wires are probably sufficient if implemented where the device needs them. kre
