We have some applications we would like to port to a Tektronix 4129 terminal. Although we have several commercial packages available such as DISSPLA and PVI, neither takes much advantage of the internal power of the terminal (hidden surfaces, wireframes, mutiple bit planes, etc.). Is there anyone out there who has written some software which talks directly to a 412x series terminal and would be willing to share it? There is some pseudo-code already written in the manual, but I find reading well-written source more understandable. Besides, there is no reason to re-invent the wheel. Anything written in C, F77, EFL, RATFOR, or PASCAL would be appreciated. Thanks. Kurt Fickie ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 May 87 22:51:54 PDT From: johnston@lbl-csam.arpa (Bill Johnston [csr]) Subject: tessellating 3D scalar fields into polygons I need information on software or algorithms to tessellate three dimensional scalar fields into polygons that can be used for rendering. To explain by example, say one has a 90 X 90 X 90 array of real numbers that have been produced by mathematical function or a simulation of some sort. Because of how this field was produced, particular constant values define a surface of interest. (Consider x**2+y**2+z**2=const.) This surface can be contoured by following the constant values along a plane that cuts the volume (assuming that any values of interest occur on this plane). The contours could the be tessellated by connecting contours in adjacent, parallel planes by lines that form polygons. Alternatively, one might consider trying to construct patches directly by trying to follow the surface. I am familiar with the contouring capability of the NCAR software, and the contour tessellating software in movie.byu. Neither of these do a very good job for complex surfaces. Can anyone give me further information and pointers to software?
