A followup to my posting about the flakey arithmetic:
I just ran the program on a MicroVAX running Ultrix,
and the subtraction was performed correctly.  So the status is:

MicroVAX/4.3BSD: bad
MicroVAX/Ultrix: good
VAX 780: good

Could it be the C compiler?
