Sorry but that is the explaination Andy Goldstein gave for the 8 item 
limit.  You might disagree.  Submitting an SPR about this "problem"
might produce the suitable canned answer.  When last I discussed the subject 
there were indications that the File System group might be preparing to actually
restrict VMS directory heirarchies to something very close to a simple tree
and remove some of the existing restrictions.  


If you are convicned that VMS directory trees are really simple trees take a 
good look at your system disk or type:

	$ create/dir [loopy]
	$ set file/enter=[loopy]loopy.dir [000000]loopy.dir
	$ dir [ineinei
