Message-Id: <8705281508.181.Perrine@LOGICON.ARPA> I am investigating what it would take to install our *first* Ethernet. I (think) I have the software questions answered, but now have to deal with the hardware aspects. We have the following systems: VAX-11/780 running 4.2BSD (no current plans to upgrade to 4.3) VAX 8250 running Ultrix (to be installed in July, Ultrix 2.0) PDP-11/70 currently running PWB! (This machine is our current Internet access, it will upgrade to 2.9BSD Real Soon Now) PDP-11/84 currently running SysVR2 (will upgrade to 2.9BSD if it is going to join the local net.) Several IBM ATs and AT clones (no current plans to add to net, but you never know) The Vaxen are the primary focus. We need to have these machines talking together more than anything else. We can wait for a while to connect them to the 11/70 (at which point the Vaxen would become a subnet behind the 11/70?). The questions are: 1) What is the most reliable/cost-effective/cheapest ethernet device to use in the 780 that is supported under 4.2BSD? (The 8250 has an integral (BI) ethernet controller, which Ultrix had better support!) 2) What is the most reliable/cost effective/cheapest ethernet device to use in the 11/70, that is supported under 2.9BSD? I dont care if the device drivers are in the BSD distributions or if they come from a vender, but I don't want to have to write them (or do a lot of support work for them). Thanks for any help you can offer. I am especially interested in personal opinions of the various vendors, etc. *Please send MAIL*. If there is any interest, I will summarize to the net.
