The Xmodem protocol REQUIRES 3 settings to work properly:

8 bits, no parity, NO X-on/X-off.  If the user does not have these
settings, the program should save the current settings, switch to the
Xmodem settings, do the transfer and then restore the old ones.  Public
networks that require 7-bit, even-parity, X-on/X-off do just that when 
doing Xmodem transfers.
