This is *nasty* Michael, you right, it IS nasty. It's also not a bug in VT100. I use the COMM terminal program version 1.34, and I have the same problem whilst using both DropShadow and Comm together. It seems that DropShadows uses something in the serial.device, and that this conflicts with any terminal program using the device. (It's happemed to me with other terminals as well as Comm).
