I have had good luck editing gigantic files with but one editor: The Personal Editor (PE) from IBM. It used to cost ~$60 or so, and I hear the new version has windows. It puts as much of the file you're editing into RAM, then commences doing disk swaps on the rest. I do know that if you attempt a global change on the entire file, it may take a while: however, it scrolls along right well, and searches aren't too sluggish. You can configure the keys to do whatever commands you like. It's basically you're staight ASCII editor. I wrote my thesis on the sucker. It was MUCH better than xedit under a CMS system.
