I believe the plan is to have Appletalk protocols running directly on
Ethernet - as long as all of your machine use reasonably standard
Ethernet controllers, it should work (in the future).

Note: in the recent Mac II announcement blizzard, there was an Apple
Ethernet card, available also from 3com, and 3com is doing a version
for the SE.
