If there is something better PLEASE tell us about it! Microsoft Word 3.0 has a reasonably sophisticated equation facility. You enter the equation as a bunch of cyptic codes, but you can quickly change its appearance to the final product (and back for editing). I haven't used it seriously, but it seems to work.
