What your friendly, fuzzy, but slightly confused Microsoft help-line person probably meant to suggest was to replace the *System* file, which contains all the standard-file stuff and can have a profound effect on the apparent health of other software. Confusion between the Finder and the System is common among Mac users, but someone paid to help users should know better. Much better.
