I think that qualifies as enough of a quorum that we can stop voting on the issue. They will continue. At the same time, however, a number of good points were brought up, and a number of folks made it clear they were interested in information and not hype. Fortunately, I tend to agree with them, and there are also some explicit rules against advertising on the Arpa internet that need to be kept in mind. So, here is how I plan on dealing with it in the future. If something is obviously (to me) a press release, the Subject line will be prefaced with the word "Release:" -- folks who don't care can use that as a key to zap it. I will also be making the distinction between a release and a solicitation for business. If you are announcing a product, that is one thing, but I will not pass along solicitations. There is a big grey area here, which I'll arbitrate on a case by case basis. Generally, if it is something that a newsletter would publish as an announcement, it ought to get published in desktop. If it is something a person would have to buy advertising for, then it will get rejected. One thing I will NOT do is edit down releases to make them more acceptable. I don't have time for that. If someone sends me something I can't publish, I'll return it and let them worry about editing it. thanks for all the feedback! chuq ---------------------------------------- Submissions to: desktop%plaid@sun.com -OR- sun!plaid!desktop Administrivia to: desktop-request%plaid@sun.com -OR- sun!plaid@desktop-request Paths: {ihnp4,decwrl,hplabs,seismo,ucbvax}!sun Chuq Von Rospach chuq@sun.COM [I don't read flames] There is no statute of limitations oex1some bsom
