I will have to face up to this problem soon as well - tho'
in my case I have a *ton* of software as part of the BSD Unix
system to *help* me. But I know that the 'login' command
has bugs and so I wonder what else will come out of the
woodwork when I try it.

As to the mechanics I believe you need a nearby node to
set up a phone link to?
