X itself does not dictate any particular human interface (window manager in the X parlance). Users are free to write their own. If you're so hot on the Mac interface, you can write a similar one that will work on an X system. Someone's probably writing one right now. Most X distributions include several window managers, one of which is uwm, probably the one you are flaming. And believe it or not, you *can* easily set up your .uwmrc file to let you manipulate windows without having to use keyboard shift keys.
