Hybrids of this sort are fairly common -- mules, cotton, wheat, ... some are naturally occuring, others are manmade. Of course, this doesn't mean that a man/ape is possible. As Pnews filler: If you match up the chromosomes of humans and the great apes (chimps, gorillas,...) based on their banding patterns, you will notice two striking things: 1) Human chromosome #2 matches with 2 chromosomes for each of the great apes -- this is the difference in chromosome number, either a fission of chromosomes leading to man, or a fusion of chromosomes leading to the great apes. 2) In nearly each chromosome there is at least one inversion in one species as compared to the others. This leads one to speculate as to the importance of inversions (and other chromosomal mutations) to evolution. (Hope that satisfies the Pnews line counter!) -- Ted H.
