As a comparison example, the Telebit Trailblazer 'pseudo'-9600 baud
modem retails for $1350 standalone.  
Comparison vs a V.32 modem:
	o It has been shown to give effective throughputs over 10Kbit/s 
		over rather noisy lines.  Fallback is in increments
		of < 100 bit/s, where a V.32 falls back by halving,
		i.e. 9600 -> 4800, etc.
	o The Trailblazer does internal error-correction, allowing
		use of lower-overhead, higher-throughput 'f' or 'e'
		protocols under UUCP.
	o The Trailblazer can act as a 103, 212, or V.22bis modem
		depending on the carrier received.
	o Hayes-compatible dialing mode allows most existing versions
		of UUCP to make use of it immediately.

	Since one would presumably make arrangements with one's
	peers for such a fast link, intercompatibility would
