For about 4 years, decwrl has used Motorola/UDS 9600-A/B V.32 modems with a
UDS EC-100 error controller added on. This combination gives us 9600-baud
full-duplex asynchronous dialup over ordinary phone lines. I am typing this
message to you over a such a modem. People in our lab have 9600-baud home
terminals.

We don't use them for uucp because none of our uucp partners have them, but
they work beautifully and reliably and have done so for years.
