We tested the USR HST 9600, and came to a different conclusion. Since the return channel is only 300 bps, character echos come back at a speed that makes you think you're connected to a 600 bps line. That's running straight ASCII. Running a protocol that makes packets of characters gives you horrible echoing. The conclusion of our engineer was that a 2400 bps modem would be more useful. We're still looking for real 9600 bps modem.
