Summary: How do I convert longitude and latitude to Mercator coordinates?

I need a function (or the mathematics, at least) to convert longitude and
latitude to coordinates on a Mercator projection.  If anyone has done this
before could you *please* mail me a copy.  Thanks in advance.  I will post
the solution to the net if there is enough interest.
