The problem is that the Ricoh engine is a WHITE writing engine, not a black writing engine like the Canon. This means that it assumes the initial page is black and it carves out the white regions by drawing white pixels on the page. Dark black solid areas come out nicer, but characters get that ragged edge look. A side note - QMS marketed a RICOH-based laser printer up until very recently.
